The first time you walk into a Texas dance hall on a Friday night, the dress code hits you before the music does. Nobody is in costume. Nobody is trying too hard. And yet everyone somehow looks right.

Start with the shirt, but keep it simple
A two-step is a moving dance. You will be turning, your arms will be up, and after four songs you will be warm. That rules out anything stiff, anything you have to keep adjusting, and anything you would be sad to sweat in.
A soft cotton tee is the honest answer. Ring-spun cotton breathes, moves with you, and looks better the more you wear it. Cream, black and navy all read well under warm dance hall lighting, and they photograph better than bright colors when someone inevitably pulls out a phone.

Boots matter more than the shirt
This is the part people get wrong. A two-step lives in the feet, and the wrong sole will fight you all night.
You want a smooth leather sole that slides on a waxed floor. Rubber grips, and grip is the enemy of a turn. A worn-in pair of roper or western boots with a low heel will carry you through a whole night. New boots that have never been broken in will not, and you will know by the third song.

Jeans that let you move
Straight leg or bootcut, worn over the boot, in a denim that has some give. Skinny jeans look fine standing at the bar and become a problem the moment you are asked to dance. Skip anything with heavy distressing at the knee, since that is exactly where the fabric needs to bend.
For women, a mid-length skirt with a little swing to it is a classic alternative, and it moves beautifully in a turn. Just be sure you can take a long stride in it.
What to leave at home
Long dangling earrings catch on hands. Loose bracelets slide and scratch. A stiff jacket will come off within twenty minutes and then you are the person carrying a jacket all night. A hat is welcome, but only if you actually wear hats. A borrowed cowboy hat that keeps sliding is not a look, it is a task.
The unwritten rules that matter more than clothes
Dance halls in Texas run counterclockwise around the floor, with faster dancers on the outside and slower ones toward the middle. Stand in the wrong lane and you will get a gentle education from a couple in their seventies who have been doing this since before you were born.
Ask people to dance. Say yes when asked. Say thank you at the end of a song. That courtesy is the actual dress code, and it is why the dance hall tradition has lasted as long as it has.
